True Friends are Family

By Pastor Cottrell King, Assistant Pastor at TLC Fellowship

Friends come and friends go, but a true friend sticks by you like family. ~ Proverb 18:24

God has placed several individuals in my life that I know I can call a “true friend”.  On this past weekend, I was able to fellowship with two of those individuals. One I met over 35 years ago while serving in the Army and the other I met about 17 years ago at a church where we were both in the marriage ministry together.

Over the years, on several occasions, I lost contact with my friend who served in the Army with me; but God always made ways for us to repeatedly cross paths. The last time I saw him was nearly 30 years ago—the weekend my wife and I were married. He had no idea I was getting married that weekend. He was in my hometown visiting my mother and father. as he always did when he was in the area. After seeing each other that weekend, we once again lost contact until about 16 years ago, when I was able to locate a telephone number for him, by way of the Internet.  I called the number and he answered the phone. Once again, we lost contact until eight months ago when he contacted me through Facebook while in the Dallas area. I saw him for the first time in nearly 30 years while in San Antonio, TX this past weekend.

On a different note, I was able to be there to support another friend whom I have known for over 17 years during the home-going celebration for his mother in San Antonio.  He is one of those individuals who always has an encouraging word and is always there when you need someone to talk to. He and his wife have been like family to my wife and me over the course of our friendship.  He has been like a brother over the years. One thing I admire about him is that. Out of love, he will tell you how he feels—whether you want to hear it or not. There are times, because of our busy schedules, that we may not see or talk to each other for months, but I know he is there if I need him. Yes, some friends come and go, but God always puts some in your path to be there for a lifetime. Some of those friends you may talk to on a daily basis and some you may only connect with once a month or once a year.   I have a limited number of “true friends” that I know God has placed in my life for a lifetime and I will always cherish those true friendships.

Prayer: Dear God, I thank you for those friends you have placed in our lives and those that were there for only a season. I pray and give you special thanks for our true friends that are a part of our families. I pray that you will continue to bless our friendships and bless us that we will continue to be there for one another. Please bless all friendships of this world. Amen
