How Deep Is Your Foundation?

By Pastor Chandra Hill, Pastor of Congregational Life and Women’s Ministry at TLC Fellowship

46 “So why do you keep calling me ‘Lord, Lord!’ when you don’t do what I say? 47 I will show you what it’s like when someone comes to me, listens to my teaching, and then follows it. 48 It is like a person building a house who digs deep and lays the foundation on solid rock. When the floodwaters rise and break against that house, it stands firm because it is well built. 49 But anyone who hears and doesn’t obey is like a person who builds a house without a foundation. When the floods sweep down against that house, it will collapse into a heap of ruins.”  ~ Luke 6:46-49

A few months ago I was visiting a long-time friend who recently opened a new barber shop in Arlington. I wanted to stop by to check out the new place and to give my well wishes. As I toured the facility and sat as the clients came in and out, I was drawn to one particular conversation. A client came in that had never been there before. During the conversation between barber and client, the client was asked what his profession was. The barber noticed his work truck outside and inquired about what seemed to be a construction or foundation company. The client went on to explain that he worked for a foundation company. My friend, being a very detailed and profound person, asked questions about the level of foundation for various types of buildings and whether or not the height of the building made a difference. The client answered him and said, “The higher the building, the deeper the foundation has to be.” WOW!  I immediately pulled out my phone to take a note of what had just been said because this is so relevant to us spiritually.

I realized that if I want to go higher, my foundation has to be deep. The higher I climb, the deeper my foundation has to be to support the structure that is being built. The scripture tells us to dig deep and lay our foundation on solid rock. Have you often wondered when the winds blow and the storms rage in your life why it seems that your “house” doesn’t stand? I have, many times. We have to realize that we have to go deep in the word of God and in our relationship with Him so that our foundation is built to stand. Dig deep my friends. It is time to go higher in the Lord!

Prayer: Father, I thank you for being God in my life and the God of my life. Help me today to dig deep and lay my foundation on solid rock. I want to go higher in you Lord. I want to be able to withstand the winds, the storms and the floodwaters of life. Take me deep into your word and your presence Lord. Help me to hear from you and follow your master plan for the building of my life. In Jesus name, Amen!

  1. We are so blessed to have God’s promise of a solid foundation. All we have to do is build on it. Thanks Pastor Chandra!
